Engagement

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

The yacht is the perfect place for a surprise engagement.  We have done many of them, at many different locations on San Diego Bay.  One of the nicest locations is off of Point Loma looking out toward the ocean with the backdrop of the city and Hotel Del behind you - at sunset.  The picture below is of a surprise engagement last week.

Flying Dolphin

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

This was taken on a recent whale watching trip.  It was in a group of about 80 dolphins that we saw.  Sightings like this a very common.  You do however have to be fast with you camera to capture a picture.

San Diego Whale Watching Season

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

San Diego whale watching season is upon us again.  Each year thousands of California Gray Whales make the long trek from their feeding grounds in the nutrient rich arctic waters to calving grounds in Baja, Mexico.

The whales can reach a length of 52ft, a weight of 36 tons and an age of 60 years.  The California Gray Whale for as large as they seem to us, is just a mid size whale. They get their name both from the gray slate color of their skin as well as from the gray-white patterns left by parasites. The California Gray Whale is classified as a baleen whale because it filters its food out from large quantities of sea water.

Sea Lions on San Diego Bay

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

We see Sea Lions on just about every trip we take.  There are several dozen that basically live at the bait barge and many other that hang out on the channel markers.  They can be noisy and will certainly say hello.  Not only will you be able to see and hear them, but they are very aromatic as well - you can smell them from a distance.

The males can weigh in at around 1000 lbs, the females are much smaller at around 200lbs. They have external ear flaps and large flippers that they use to “walk” on land. The trained “seals” in zoos and aquariums are usually California sea lions.

This picture was taken on a recent charter.

Gay Marriages - Posponed yet Again

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

A federal appeals court has blocked the resumption of gay marriages in California.  At this point, it does not look likely that gay couples will be able to marry until at least early in the new year.

Gay Marriage in California

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

Gay Weddings in San Diego As of August 18, 2010 Gay marriage will be legally available again in California. There has been a temporary stay for about a week since the US District struck down the ban on gay marriage. Today that temporary stay was lifted and gay marriage will again be legal in California.

Let us hope that this right is now here to say.  According to the judge, it is his view that an appeal of this decision would unlikely be successful.

It is expected that many gay couples will take advantage of this opportunity and “Tie the Knot”.  If you are interested in exchanging vows on a private yacht, we would be pleased to be of assistance.

Whale Season Ending

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

It looks like it is the end of “Whale Season” for this year.  We did a whale watching charter yesterday, but with no sign of the big guys.

This time of the year they are heading back up the coast - having given birth and feeding in Mexico.  They tend to be much further from shore, typically around 10 miles out and are focused on getting back to Alaska to feed.

Tsunami Aftermath in San Diego Bay

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

As a result of Chile’s 8.8 magnitude earthquake there was some violent surge in San Diego Bay.  Several boats broke free of their moorings and several dock cleats were ripped out.  The Bali Hai dock has a section missing and several pieces of it were floating around America Cup Harbor.  The surge at our slip was about 8 knots as water rushed under our boat.
