San Diego Whale Watching

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

Whale Watching Had a great whale watching charter today - we saw about 7 whales and got a great video of what looks like a mother and calf. This is a bit unusual since the whales are heading to Mexico to calve this time of year - looks like this little guy is a bit early.

This time of year thousand of California Gray Whales head from their feeding grounds in Alaska to calving grounds in Mexico. It is the longest migration path of any animal.

Elephant Seal and Pup - Los Coronados Islands

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

Elephant Seal and Pup - Los Coronados Islands
On a recent trip to the beautiful Coronado Islands we were able to see a mother elephant seal and her newborn pup on one of the rocky beaches.  During the summer months these beaches are home to sealions and harbor seals, but in the winter the Northern Elephant seals make their way south to these protected islands.  This is a rare opportunity to see these giant seals!/

San Diego is the third stop in the inaugural America’s Cup World Series take place in November.  This is a very big deal for San Diego as the world best sailing will be in town racing the worlds fastest catamarans.
Current plans call to hold racing within San Diego Bay, with the start/finish line just off Navy and Broadway Piers and spectator access along numerous points on the waterfront including Harbor Island and Harbor Drive. The regatta will give the public an opportunity to watch the world’s top sailors compete in the state-of-the-art AC45 wing-sailed catamarans, which will be the first time the high-tech boats will be raced in the U.S.

Engagement

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

The yacht is the perfect place for a surprise engagement.  We have done many of them, at many different locations on San Diego Bay.  One of the nicest locations is off of Point Loma looking out toward the ocean with the backdrop of the city and Hotel Del behind you - at sunset.  The picture below is of a surprise engagement last week.

Flying Dolphin

This was taken on a recent whale watching trip.  It was in a group of about 80 dolphins that we saw.  Sightings like this a very common.  You do however have to be fast with you camera to capture a picture.

San Diego Whale Watching Season

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

San Diego whale watching season is upon us again.  Each year thousands of California Gray Whales make the long trek from their feeding grounds in the nutrient rich arctic waters to calving grounds in Baja, Mexico.

The whales can reach a length of 52ft, a weight of 36 tons and an age of 60 years.  The California Gray Whale for as large as they seem to us, is just a mid size whale. They get their name both from the gray slate color of their skin as well as from the gray-white patterns left by parasites. The California Gray Whale is classified as a baleen whale because it filters its food out from large quantities of sea water.

Sea Lions on San Diego Bay

Published by Captain Parks under Clients Charters

We see Sea Lions on just about every trip we take.  There are several dozen that basically live at the bait barge and many other that hang out on the channel markers.  They can be noisy and will certainly say hello.  Not only will you be able to see and hear them, but they are very aromatic as well - you can smell them from a distance.

The males can weigh in at around 1000 lbs, the females are much smaller at around 200lbs. They have external ear flaps and large flippers that they use to “walk” on land. The trained “seals” in zoos and aquariums are usually California sea lions.

This picture was taken on a recent charter.
